The neighborhood of Society Hill stands divided from the rest of Jersey City by Route 440. Off Route documents the highway, from before it was a residential area to present day issues it faces.
This project is connected to Over the Hill, a solution to the problems Off Route documents.
Project Description
Prompted by a search for issues specific and unique to Society Hill in Jersey City, location and isolation became evident themes in the lives of residents. Caused by the separation of the community by Route 440, the neighborhood lives in a state of disconnect.
For the video segment of this project, I walked from the neighborhood, along Route 440 to the nearest train station over a mile away. Documenting the unkept and hazardous sidewalks, the video serves as a demonstration for the daily commute a resident faces.
Other historical data, including the original use of the land, highlights the lack of change in infrastructure, despite change in purpose. Further research can be found on the website.
